The story goes that Michelangelo once visited Raphael’s studio and examined one of his early drawings. He then picked up a piece of chalk and scrawled the Latin word “Amplius” across the canvass. “Amplius” meant “greater”. To Michelangelo’s trained eye, Raphael’s work did not reflect the talent that he possessed. In so doing, Michelangelo challenged Raphael to aspire for greater heights.

And when the Italian Renaissance era is remembered, three painters stand with prominence: Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo… and Raphael.
